Curriculum reviews, unit overviews and lesson plans
Water and Enzymes, Scientific Method, Cell Organization, Cell Theory, and Genetics This documents contains sample unit descriptions, lesson plans, materials, and self-reflections for four mini lessons and two extended lessons I prepared and taught during my practicum field experience at Fort Defiance High School. My practicum was split between two classrooms. The first was a 10th grade biology course with a focus on topics related to agriculture and forestry. The second was a smaller class of 11th and 12th grade students taking an advanced dual enrollment biology course. Differentiated Lessons on Ecology, Defining Living Organisms, Homeostasis, & Cell Theory These lessons were designed to facilitate differentiation in a general classroom that includes students who may struggle, be on grade level, or excel in the content and their learning skills. Each uses a different strategy to adjust questions for the process, product, or content of a lesson. The lessons also include brief rationales for why the lessons were modified in a particular way and a method for assessment. There are also details that help explain how the teacher is able to manage different groups working on different tasks in the classroom. Inspiration in the Classroom: A Lesson for Mapping Cell Theory & Sample Concept Maps The first link contains a lesson plan composed during a course on technology in the classroom. It incorporates concept mapping into a lesson for 10th grade biology students using Inspiration software. Mapping flow charts and web diagrams can support critical thinking skills, and in this lesson, Inspiration helped me to engage the students as a whole class in this process, encourage participation and praise students immediately on their brainstorming, and facilitate interaction and collaboration. Inspiration also allowed me to print off the final creations in each block for an organizer to aid visual learners and provide notes for struggling students. The second link, "Sample Concept Map" will only open if Inspiration is installed on your computer. |
