Sample Classroom Rules and Procedures
I believe setting up classroom rules and guidelines can be a great opportunity to introduce students to consensus decision making. Drawing up rules, consequences, and rewards as a class also helps to build a sense of community in the classroom and immediately allows students to be involved and give their input into a class discussion. However, this process must be guided by the teacher. Before referring to the students, I must have a clear idea of my own expectations in the classroom and the types of behaviors which I know from experience will ensure a safe learning environment. Having my own basic rules will also give the students a starting point from which to make proposals for additions and modifications. The following form might be used to guide discussions on classroom rules and procedures.
Classroom Rules & Procedures
Rules and procedures are fundamental in life. We follow rules and procedures in our daily lives for things such as approaching a traffic light, starting a car and driving, and making a letter. There are also rules and procedures in this classroom. These rules and procedures ensure a positive atmosphere in the classroom. They contribute to a controlled and learning environment for everyone.
